Learnings from 2024 in the interim HR market

Tue, January 28, 2025

As we reflect on 2024, the interim HR market has been a whirlwind of challenges, successes, and valuable lessons. Here, our interim consultant, James Roberts, takes a closer look at the highlights and lowlights, and shares his key learnings and advice for both clients and candidates when navigating this fast-paced sector.

The highs and lows of 2024

This year, I had the privilege of working with more exceptional clients, including McDonald's, E.L.F. Cosmetics, and MTR Elizabeth Line. Their commitment to excellence provided invaluable insights into the dynamics of the interim market and reinforced the value of strong partnerships.

Across the broader market, the challenges in 2024 were numerous and reflective of industry-wide trends. Lengthy hiring processes, last-minute changes to role requirements, and the difficulty of balancing client expectations with candidate realities often created roadblocks. These hurdles highlighted the importance of efficiency, flexibility, and clear communication across all stakeholders.

Successes and key learnings

As the interim lead at Macmillan Davies, I’ve placed numerous interim HR professionals into roles where they’ve made a tangible impact. 2024 emphasised the importance of being adaptable to client needs while maintaining a clear focus on rapid, high-quality placements.

Our clients benefit from a comprehensive service tailored to their unique requirements. From the first conversation to the placement, we ensure seamless experiences, often filling roles in record time — sometimes even on the same day.

Advice for clients

If you’re hiring interim professionals, preparation is everything. Here are some key considerations to ensure success:

  1. Define your needs clearly
Before engaging with a recruiter, ensure you’ve identified the role's requirements and how it fits into your organisation. Being indecisive or frequently changing the role’s scope can harm your brand and delay the process.
  2. Be competitive with rates
While saving money on rates may seem sensible, it can lead to losing top-tier candidates. Investing in the best talent upfront often saves money in the long run, as these professionals deliver exceptional value.
  3. Streamline your processes
Time is critical in the interim market. Lengthy hiring procedures often result in missed opportunities. Efficient decision-making ensures you secure the best talent quickly.
  4. Trust your recruiter
Experienced recruiters like those at Macmillan Davies know their candidates deeply. Trusting us allows us to find creative solutions, as demonstrated when one client revised a role to cover Germany. Initially, this change seemed like it would require starting the process from scratch. However, because we deeply understand our candidates’ experience and capabilities, we identified that the candidate already at the offer stage had prior experience in the German market. By recommending them for the revised role, the client avoided unnecessary delays and additional costs, securing the perfect candidate for their updated requirements.
  5. Flexibility is key
The best candidates often have multiple offers. A flexible approach, whether in timelines, expectations, or compensation, can make all the difference in securing top talent.

Advice for candidates

For interim professionals, your personal brand and attitude are critical. In this niche market, reputation can be your greatest asset or your biggest liability.

  1. Be professional and reliable
Cancelling interviews at the last minute or arriving late reflects poorly on you and can harm your prospects. For instance, we recently encountered a candidate who cancelled an interview just five minutes before it was scheduled to begin. This not only damaged their credibility but also jeopardised their relationship with both us and the client. On the other hand, we’ve encountered remarkable displays of dedication that leave a lasting impression. For instance, one candidate answered our call on the same day as a close family member’s funeralnot that we expected this at all, but it did exemplify an extraordinary level of commitment and professionalism. Once we realised the circumstances, we immediately rescheduled the conversation for the following day. Notably, this candidate went on to secure the role just two days later, underscoring how a positive attitude and unwavering reliability can set candidates apart in a competitive market.
  2. Prepare thoroughly
Even for interim roles, preparation is essential. Understand the company, the role, and how you can make an immediate impact.
  3. Maintain open communication
Keep your recruiter informed about your availability, preferences, and any changes in your circumstances. Transparency ensures the best fit for both parties.
  4. Show flexibility
Being open to new challenges, industries, or geographical locations can open doors to exciting opportunities that might not have been on your radar.
