Standing firm in power and pride: Celebrating Black History Month in recruitment
Wed, October 22, 2025
At Macmillan Davies, we believe that recruitment isn’t just about placing the right person in the right role; it’s about shaping inclusive workplaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered. This October, as we celebrate Black History Month in the UK, we are inspired by this year’s theme: “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”, as Darren Hayman, our Managing Director, explains.
This theme reminds us of the strength and resilience within the Black community and challenges all of us to reflect on how we can create spaces where that power and pride can flourish. In recruitment and HR, this means more than promoting diversity; it’s about embedding equity and representation into every stage of the hiring process, from outreach and shortlisting to onboarding and leadership development.
- Standing firm means challenging bias, both conscious and unconscious, in our recruitment practices. It means ensuring that candidates from all backgrounds have equitable access to opportunities and are judged on their skills, experience, and potential, not limited by barriers or stereotypes.
- Standing in power is about amplifying voices that have historically been underrepresented. It’s about ensuring that once talent enters the organisation, they are supported to thrive and lead.
- Standing in pride is about celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black professionals, past and present, whose excellence continues to enrich our industries and communities.
“For HR professionals, this is a powerful opportunity to take meaningful action” says Darren. “By reviewing recruitment strategies, implementing inclusive language in job descriptions, and diversifying interview panels, HR teams can help remove systemic barriers and ensure fair representation. Creating employee resource groups, offering cultural awareness training, and recognising Black contributions throughout the year can also strengthen belonging and build pride within the workforce.”
HR systems and data partner Artiana Blaize Chartered MCIPD, originally from the Virgin Islands and now working at BPP Education Group, shared her reflections on identity, representation, and belonging in the workplace. Alongside her role at BPP, Artiana serves as wellbeing lead for the CIPD Manchester Branch and was previously its diversity and inclusion lead.
“Your difference is your strength; the things that make you unique often give you the perspective to create real impact.”
For Artiana, representation goes beyond numbers:
“Meaningful representation means seeing diversity reflected at every level of an organisation, with leaders who actively create space for others to thrive. When leaders model inclusive behaviours, it transforms the entire organisation.”
As we reflect on Black History Month, we recommit to helping organisations build truly equitable workplaces. As Artiana puts it,
“I hope my visibility shows young professionals they belong in these spaces too.”
At Macmillan Davies, we’re proud to work with clients who share our commitment to inclusion and representation. As we reflect on Black History Month, we recommit to helping organisations build truly equitable workplaces.
