Reduce the job search anxiety

Wed, April 05, 2023

Job hunting can be daunting. Many job seekers experience anxiety, or fear and unease, as they work toward obtaining a new job. This can be caused by a number of things, including the rejection that comes with applying, the ambiguity of the future, and the stress that comes with interviewing. Here, Natalie Belton, Senior Consultant in our London office, shares some top tips to make your job search as stress-free as possible.

Follow a routine

When you have a full-time or a part-time job, you have to stick to a schedule. When it comes to seeking a new job, treat that as your job. This means working on your search for a set number of hours, taking regular breaks, and finishing at a set time allowing you to rest and disconnect.

Aside from this make time to relax. Spend time in the fresh air and make sure you have enough rest. No one can give their best in an interview if they didn’t sleep well the night before.

Be consistent

It’s important to approach job hunting as you would any project. Make time to consistently focus on it. Know exactly what kind of roles you wish to apply for. Talk to your recruitment consultant on a regular basis and make sure you tell them if you have other interviews. It may be that we can move the process slightly faster on jobs you are interviewing with us for.

Communicate & ask for help

Please make sure you tell your consultant if you feel nervous or anxious prior to any interviews. Ask for advice on your CV if necessary. Prepare for the interview in advance and arrive at the destination a little early. Have a list of questions for the interviewers.

Remember rejection isn’t personal

With every job search comes rejection. There are so many factors and variables – outside of your control – that impact the candidates hiring managers to consider for a role. As such, just because you were rejected, doesn’t mean the team didn’t like you.

Be prepared

It’s important to be prepared. Preparation will help to ease the worry.

Believe in yourself

Please don’t feel disconcerted about applying for roles. Be confident in your abilities and past experience. Each day is a new day and new jobs and roles become available each day and each week, so don’t feel downhearted if it takes a little longer than you hoped.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, it’s easy to focus on that one role that seems ’perfect’ - operating with flexibility and adaptability will allow you to stay motivated despite the disappointment that can come with job searching.
