Productivity: Top tips for home or hybrid working
Thu, April 20, 2023
The world of work has changed. As has the idea that a productive worker is one who remains seated at their desk in an office all day. Hybrid working from home offers greater freedom, autonomy and trust. While there are advantages and disadvantages to working both from home and in a traditional office, a hybrid environment can potentially give you the best of both worlds and make for your best work yet. Natalie Belton, Senior Consultant shares some top tips to set yourself up for success.
Make a plan for every day
Keep yourself accountable with a daily to-do list. At the end of each workday, jot down a task list for the next day, detailing what you need to get done and by what time. Complete the hardest tasks for the day first – then when your energy is waning you have the easiest/most enjoyable ones to look forward to.
Maintain communication
For a hybrid environment to succeed, it’s important to keep open lines of communication with your colleagues. It’s easy for information to get lost in one-on-one conversations and instant messages, so ensure you have regular video calls and team check-ins, even when working remotely.
Take breaks
You can only work for so long. If you really want to be productive, consider taking regular breaks and giving your mind (and body) time to refresh. Ensure you take your lunch break – go for a walk, head to the gym, do some gardening, or listen to the radio for a while. Take your mind off work and you will be recharged for the afternoon.
Minimise digital distractions
From Netflix to social media, it’s easy to let digital distractions get the better of you. Think about disabling notifications and putting your phone elsewhere when you’re trying to work.
Get up and get going
It can be tempting to sleep later when you don’t have to rush out the door but maintaining an early start is a good strategy. Set an alarm for an hour or so before your spouse or children wake up. You’ll be surprised at how much you can get done when the house is quiet.
