Ensuring a smooth transition to a new role
Mon, April 03, 2023
A new job can be exciting and challenging and a great time to focus on growth and change, but it can also be scary and overwhelming. Here, Natalie Belton, Senior Consultant in our London office, shares some top tips to make your transition into a new role as smooth as possible.
Be organised
Whether it’s doing your research, arriving early on your first day, or planning your outfit and commute for your first day, being organised will help to alleviate some of that first-day stress.
Get to know your team
Thinking about asking to be involved in a team meeting prior to your start date. Even if it’s virtual it’s a great start to getting to know your new team. You will also feel more confident on your first day.
Be flexible and positive
There’s nothing like being proactive to show how happy and enthusiastic you are to start at your new company. Be friendly and smile – you will be far more approachable to your new team. Introduce yourself to everyone you meet, making an effort to remember names and roles helps you to look warm and welcoming.
Take notes to help you remember
We often take for granted what we’ll remember when we’re learning new things. Notwithstanding your skill level or the number of years of experience, this is a new company to you. Even if you’re comfortable with the role, you need to get comfortable with how to do that job at this company. Take notes - writing things down shows that you are engaged in what people are taking the time to share with you and it’ll come in handy in case you forget something later on.
Ask questions
Utilise the first few weeks in your new role to learn as much as you can about your role, your team, and the company, department, and role. While it’s important to show initiative, feel free to ask thoughtful questions and speed up your learning process. Remember it’s ok to say that you don’t understand something and ask for it to be repeated.
Be patient
It takes time to establish yourself as a trusted member of a new team. Whether you’re joining as a leader or manager or team member, don’t assume you’ll be up and running on day one – have realistic expectations about the time it will take you to fully settle in.
