Applying for a job? Learn how to stand out from the crowd
Tue, May 09, 2023
You know you’re perfect for that role – but you’re not the only one. In many industries and sectors, the competition for roles is still high. Even though you may tick all the boxes in terms of qualifications, experience, and track record, with a great personality to match – so may all the other candidates. So how do stand out from the crowd? Natalie Belton, Senior Consultant in our London office shares some tips.
Ensure your CV is clear & concise
Clearly and concisely list the main parts of your role under each organisation stating how long you were in the role for. Anyone working in Talent Acquisition or working as a recruiter has to look through hundreds of CVs – so if yours is too complicated, or difficult to read, they may miss a relevant skill or experience to the role you’ve applied for.
Also, remember to personalise your CV to the role - many companies use applicant tracking systems that can scan for key skills for the job role – ensure these are clearly listed within your CV.
Do your research on the company
If you have been able to get an interview, I always advise candidates to have a good answer to ‘What do you know about us?’ that goes beyond the details on a company’s ‘About us’ page. Understand their values and make sure that it feels like a good fit for you. Have some questions ready to ask them at the end. Remember that it’s a chance for you to find out more as well.
Be memorable
Many hiring decisions can be based on feelings, so one way to stand out is to be memorable in your interview. Research your interviewers for commonalities you can connect on and stand out. Consider leaving something behind or maybe sending something to remind hiring managers about you, such as a portfolio of work.
Send a comprehensive follow-up
When you send a follow-up note, be sure to go above and beyond by including work samples, or better yet, an example of something that you would do on the job.
Stay in touch
Stay in contact with your recruiter, an email or text message will do. Feedback on the interview process and get in touch if you need help with anything to make you feel more comfortable during the interview process.
