Booz & Company recently posted a video on Culture, highlighting it is as the one aspect of a company nearly 50% of leaders feel is not effectively managed, or requires an overhaul. As culture becomes a critical tool to drive talent attraction and retention, what should be HR’s part in this? In my view, these are some things we can do to effect change in order to implement the right culture in the organisation:

1. Implement an effective organizational structure that can facilitate the development of the desired culture and values of the company. This is also the key to ensure scalability, regardless of the size of the organisation.

2. Ensure the performance review process is reflective of the company culture and appropriate KPIs are set. This will ensure staff are recognised for displaying company values, and not just results.

3. Hire for attitude, not just aptitude – a less experienced employee with a positive attitude and desire to contribute to the organisation is much more beneficial than a stubborn experienced hire set in her ways. An employee with the right attitude can affect the people around them, and act as a culture role model. Of course, all these are assuming culture change is a priority on the leadership agenda and HR has a seat at the table.
