Head of HR Strategy, Commercial Bank of Dubai
The brief
Commercial Bank of Dubai were looking to expand outside of Dubai, which had profound people implications. The focus was on strengthening career development, succession planning, recruitment, organisational change, remuneration and performance management. We were tasked to recruit an exceptional Head of HR Strategy with excellent strategic and commercial experience in these areas who could lead this change. Ideally, the person would come from outside the UAE and be willing to relocate.
The solution
As the candidate would be drawn from a wide geographical territory, we developed a retained selection option. This was supported by both general and specific press, a targeted range of job boards and the MDH database.
Conducting a variety of face-to-face, telephone and Skype-based interviews meant we arrived at a strong shortlist. All our potential candidates had a good working knowledge of the Middle East, exposure to senior stakeholders and a consultancy background with a distinct OD emphasis.
Our London offices were used for many of the initial sessions and three shortlisted candidates were then invited to the client offices in UAE for chemistry meetings and further interviews. The focus was on ensuring candidates would be comfortable with the lifestyle change as well as the career move.
The result
An exceptional candidate was able to start within a month of receiving the offer and he is still living and working in Dubai for the Commercial Bank of Dubai.
MDH were…“proactive in action and communication and very thorough in the screening of candidates, having taken time to understand not only the role in question but also the environment in which the successful candidate would be working…”
Clive Harrison, Head of HR at Commercial Bank of Dubai
Breakthrough Breast Cancer
The brief
Breakthrough Breast Cancer had taken the strategic decision to create a new HR role at Leadership team level to drive the development of their brand as an employer. Having invested significantly in their corporate brand, the organisation was mindful that the internal brand for employees was not consistent with their external brand. As a result, the CEO and Trustees wanted to recruit a highly experienced HR professional who understood how to align the employer brand with the corporate brand and also create and drive change throughout the business from the top down. They were keen to recruit an individual with outstanding relationship management skills who could engage people naturally at all levels within the organisation.
The result
We worked closely with the CEO and Trustees to profile a number of benchmark candidates, recognising that as a charity, the package would need to appeal holistically. We also sourced candidates through targeted advertising, producing a strong shortlist. Catherine Devitt was appointed in June 2010; a senior HR practitioner who brings an outstanding track record of commercial HR leadership, experience of driving change, but most importantly connects passionately with the objectives and values of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
“As a candidate working with MDH was a really positive experience for me. They understand the fact that the candidate’s view of the hiring organisation begins with the experience they have with the search agent. I felt valued, involved and listened to throughout the process. I trusted them to find me the right role – and they did. When next I am looking to engage an executive search agency I will look no further than MDH.”
Catherine Devitt, Director of People & Organisational Development at Breakthrough Breast Cancer
